``Suite of the Sea'' is a work that won first place over Manente's ``On the Plains of Melia'' in a 1908 composition competition sponsored by Il Pretolo, a mandolin magazine published in Milan, Italy. It is inspired by the gods associated with water in Greek mythology, and Il Plettro magazine describes the author's intention for each movement as follows:
First Movement (Naiade Serenata) Andante Grazioso
A mysterious night has come to the sea. The calm sea becomes a fairy world, and the naiads fly around with joy.
Second Movement (Dance of Ondina) Allegretto
Ondinas dance. The bewitching dance is full of enchantment and dreaminess.
Third Movement (Sirena's Song) Andante
Unaware of the danger to their lives, the sailors get lost in Sirena's beautiful song and succumb to a deep, peaceful sleep.
Fourth movement (Tritone fugue) Allegro vivace
The rudderless ship is now in danger, caught in heavy waves. Tritone runs from left to right while blowing shells to calm the sea and save the sailors.
